New, What do i buy?

I can save 100$ a week (i only have a few hundred saved right now because i just put most of my savings into silver) for either guns, gold and or silver and other preps if needed.

What should i buy in terms of a gun?

im not sure if i want to get something cheap so i can pour more of my money into silver or put the silver on hold and save up for a nice gun

Three weeks worth of saving will get you a nice 12 gauge pump shotgun!

Well, assuming you're responsible enough to own a gun in the first place, there's no number of guns you "should" own. If you have more than one gun, it's generally because you have more than one reason to have a gun, more than one person there to shoot a gun, or you just plain like to shoot.

Make a list of the reasons you want a gun, then buy your guns in the order of the list. For example, is home defense your first reason for having a gun? Then you would narrow it down further by asking yourself other questions, such as do other family members need to be comfortable shooting it, do you have to get something that won't kill your neighbors if you miss the home invader, do you prefer a handgun or a shotgun (I don't intend to accidently shoot my dogs, so I prefer a handgun for home defense instead of a shotgun, although the shotgun is there, if needed), what price range, how expensive/available is the ammo, etc.

selling? what are the reasons? are you going to buy another gun

Re: New, What do i buy?

Just save your money and wait for a good deal to come along, and buy it! Get a handgun first, and get familiar with it. You can't go wrong with a Glock, S&W, Springfield, etc. Good deals are going to come along this year on handguns as many of the people that are buying guns now during this rush are going to dump them later in 2009 when the economy worsens and they need cold hard cash! Many of these guns will be unfired, like new in the box being sold by older men and women that probably shouldn't have a gun anyways. Get to know whatever you get, and shoot it regulary, training for how you think you MAY have to use it. If you plan on getting it for defense, train getting it and firing it under stress. If you plan on carrying it, get you CCDW permit and train on drawing it and shooting. Either way, train!

That's a good question because one gun is not going to cut it for everything.

You have to decide what are the most likely scenarios.

A P-95 and a mossberg pump would probably cover most home defense scenarios. That would be about 1K total after ammo, shipping/fees and everything else but you would not have an effective weapon for past 50-75 yards, lets say and you don't have alot of capacity with the shotgun.

So you may want to consider a battle rifle after that (M1a, FAL PTR-91) or go the m4 or AK-47 route depending on your philosophy. Any of those options will run over 1k nowadays or close to it when you factor in all the costs.

If it were me I'd just try to get something in my hands right now. I'd get the pistol first because it can be carried concealed.

Just make sure you don't take any firearms on any boating trips. It is a well known fact here on GIM that boats + firearms = sinkage of ships and guns.

Re: New, What do i buy?

I will second what Maddie posted, that it is important to determine why you want to own firearms.

IMO, Blackjack, if you have never been a gun owner or have never even fired a gun, going out and buying a large caliber and/or high-maintenance weapon is probably not a good idea at first.

When people ask these type of questions of me, I tell them that it is a good idea to have 3 different types of weapons for starters: a handgun, a rifle, and a shotgun. What caliber or type depends upon the purposes and the person using them, so there's no one answer that fits all.

If you are a first timer who sincerely wishes to learn about firearms, I suggest that before you buy anything else you get a .22 rifle, either a magazine fed or a tube fed semi-automatic. Some people might recommend a single shot or a bolt action .22, but I think you might get bored with that too quickly.

The nice things about .22's: the ammunition is very inexpensive (so far), there is little if any recoil and .22 rifles are good for learning good firearm handling habits and are usually not hard to maintain cleaningwise. Plus, for $200 or even less, you can get a good .22 rifle new, so within two weeks time you should be able to get one and a 500-round brick of .22 ammo for practicing.

Once you feel comfortable with a .22 rifle, and it shouldn't take long, then go ahead and branch out to handguns, shotguns and/or other rifles.

Now if this is a "Obama is going to ban firearms soon so I had better get something now" type of reaction, then I really don't know what to tell you specifically. What others here have recommended is probably as good as anything.

Best of luck to you!

My first firearm was a Glock model 22. It is 40 caliber and has a decent amount of recoil for a handgun, but nothing too crazy. I really love it. It's a great firearm. Very reliable and fun to shoot.

Re: New, What do i buy?

A Glock 22 (.40S+W) is a nice gun. You will be able to find most any aftermarket part , lights ,holsters ,night sight, ect are made to fit it. Get at least 5 extra mags. This place has mags in stock

http://www.ombexpress.com/i_15.aspx

Mossberg makes decent home defense shotguns in several decent configurations for low price. They work fine.

You will hear all kinds of opinions about how most any gun is great and or junk. If you just want to hold a couple guns for self defense before it is to late ...these will work. Also the glock has good name recognition if you ever want to sell it.

Re: New, What do i buy?

I was new about 5 weeks ago and took the plunge for home defense reasons. My first purchase was a Smith and Wesson 40ve Sigma because I liked the feel of it, liked that it has 14-round mag capacity, and the online reviews were pretty good for the most part. It also fit into my budget for a first time gun owner.

After thinking about it some, I didnt want to take a chance on a semiauto handgun jamming (I am too new to guns and wouldnt know how to clear it in an emergency) so I plunked down another $530 and bought a Ruger SP101 .357 magnum revolver. I also thought about the slide mechanism on the pistol and think my g/f would have trouble with it if she was in position where she had to use it. I feel better having a reliable revolver in my home.

So take the advice of the people here and also DYODD (do your own due diligence) to help you make the decison that is best for you.

The things that hasn't been mentioned is where does the OP plan to shoot and where will he/she obtain training? The OP sounds like someone with very little exposure to firearms and the last thing they should do is plunk down a wad of FRNs for a weapon and have no idea how to handle it safely.

Look online for shooting ranges in the area and see if they offer starter classes.

That may be true my good man .......but there is a real possiblity that time is not on our side.

Get the gun......it can sit in the corner and minds it business until to he finds a range or trainer that he is comfortable with.

Guns dont to anything fatal or harmful unless you handle them with bullets and you dont know what you are doing period end of story.

Get it ........dont touch it nor allow anybody else to touch it.......until you are trained for it.

EXACTLY TA!

That is why I mentioned those two guns. Get them....you can't go wrong with those two. You will have something top notch in the glock and the Mossberg will work just fine. I 've got my stuff all set. I have one of this ,one of that ,a couple of those.......I can now get picky and sell what I don't want when the time comes. If you don't have anything it sounds like like you will have to get in line pretty soon....believe me.

Re: New, What do i buy?

12 Gauge Shotgun Home defense
Remington, Mossberg, or Saiga & 500+ rnds of bird shot and 200+ rnds of 00Buckshot.

Ruger 10/22 & 5000+rnds of .22lr: Hunting small game.

Cz83/Walther PPK (Pistol Holster Maker: Lou Alessi & the bodyguard shoulder rig specifically)

Pick 1 or more:
Savage 110 with accutrigger
Remingtion 700
M14
Ar-15 platform with gas piston conversion
in:
.30-06
.308 Winchester *
7.62x51mm NATO * There's a difference.
.300 Winchester Magnum
.300 Remington Ultra Magnum
.338 Lapua

Ak-47

After you've got that: then worry about stopping power and toys.

Walther P99(great ergonomics) or 1911 or CZ75 or revolver or whatever for stopping power. I don't really have any interest in slow big bullets so I don't know much about them or which guns are good at firing them. I hear S&W sucks it big time on quality though.

Kevlar:
Cz-52
FN Five SeveN
.357 Sig
.357 Magnum

Battle rifles:
pps43
UZI Carbine
P90
Ar-15 variant (rock river arms has a good reputation. Get a stripped lower and build from that.)
Mini-14

Firearms? If you have the gun shipped to a licensed dealer. There's usually a small fee involved.

Re: New, What do i buy?

First purchase:

Mossberg 500 series or Remington 870 series shotgun

Next purchase:

One more shotgun for each adult member of your household

Further purchases:

Semi-auto rifles or pistols as your situation and personal desires dictate.

I agree with getting a shotty first for home defense. Then a good 10/22 rifle, then a handgun then some evil black rifles.

Re: New, What do i buy?

Lots of good replies here. My police department here uses Glock 22's and remington 870's. There's a good reason for this, both are not prone to problems, are easy to maintain, and are workhorses that can deal with not being treated correctly. I also own a few Glock 27's, for ease of carrying. I also would recommend the Glock 17 for the 9mm price is cheaper than .40 caliber.

Also, Smith & Wesson makes a heck of a 5 shot revolver in .38 special, I own a 642 that I will probably always have with me, I love this gun! If you are not comfortable with how to deal with slides on semi-autos, a revolver is nearly fail proof. No worries about stove pipes or fail to feeds, just pull the dang trigger!

An AR15 would always be a good gun to have for both it's firepower AND it's value. Might not be able to get them in the future, so having one now couldn't hurt. They can be addictive though, as you can buy more aftermarket stuff for them than a Honda Civic!

I don't know about this one, I think the Civic barely wins out in the Pimp Me Out category.

Get a shotgun, usually you can find a deal with a couple barrels. Some sell with barrels that will shoot slugs and/or buckshot without switching out.

Get a semi-automatic pistol with a long barrel and good auccuracy. Buy extra magazines for this guy.

Get a snuB nosed, hammerless revolver that is smaller than your hand.

Get a long rifle....learn on the .22 calibur, which is cheap. Eventually get a bigger calibur that is similar in some ways to your .22 rifle.

A lot of guys here like the evil black rifles but what I listed is already a great start for anybody.
